Hair highlighting can enhance the beauty of your hair by giving it the look you want –funky, chic or sophisticated. Highlights are an easy and, in comparison to other hair-dying processes, a far less time-consuming way to give your hair a new look. Highlights are best known for the way they direct attention to the focal point of the haircut, reinforcing the style the cut portrays.
Highlights to the hair are not the same as hair colouring. Unlike the latter, they involve the dying of only a few strands of the hair –not the entire head of hair. Because highlights are mainly meant to create strands of hair that “stand out” from the rest of the hair, they are often dyed in bright colours such as red, purple, bronze to name but a few of the colour choices available. The highlighted strands may even be given a metallic touch. However, highlights can also be dyed in less intense colours such as honey blonde or light brown depending on the intent of the person having their hair highlighted.
Highlighting can be accomplished in various ways depending on the skill and normal practice of the styling professional. But in general there are four ways which highlighting is done: foil highlighting which utilizes foil to wrap the coloured strands from interacting with the rest of the hair; hair painting which uses colour and a brush; chunking which is a method by which “chunks” of different widths and lengths of hair are dyed; and low lighting which emphasizes lighter shades of colour (also known as reverse highlighting).
While highlights improve the overall look of one’s hair, the chemicals (hair dyes etc) used for highlighting can lead to a considerable amount of damage to natural hair if not used properly. Chemically treated hair is also very susceptible to damage if overexposed to sunlight. The natural texture of the hair may become damaged and it can take several months, if not years to fully recover the health of chemically over processed hair.
It is essential to be careful that hair highlighting is not applied more often than directed.
