Shoulder Length Hairstyles – the Great Variation

Marlee Matlin Shoulder length curls hairstyles 2011Shoulder length hairstyles are the most versatile of styles and the trendiest. Shoulder length hair has produced some of the most iconic celebrity hairstyles because it has a lot of playfulness to it.  The two Jennifers, Aniston and Garner, have with completely different styles made medium length into the must-have look. Nicole Richie’s variation with her wide, swept fringe and stresses with slightly inward curling ends is the current favorite. With this hair length minute flips to the ends outward or other alternative directions can provide an abundance of hairstyles.

The fringe plays a very important role in most shoulder length hairstyles. It comes in many forms and shapes, with shag, choppy locks or layers. A hairstyle with slightly swept bangs is very fashionable. The best part is that the bangs can be twisted into many forms. Styling them for formal occasions can effortlessly produce elegant results by just adding small curls at the tips of bangs or side sweeps. Fringe molding techniques can make the cut look different every day.

Medium length curls when scrunched slightly produce an amazing rumpled look. Miniature, tight curls when coupled with bangs produce a nice touch. A multi-layer cut is very adaptable style. An adorable shoulder length hairstyle can be created with split front bangs partially covering the face. These parted bangs look very sleek in combination with hair ends that are crimped and tousled. A tiny bit of back combing and layering to the top will create a bit of volume. Read the rest of this entry »

Hairstyles for Business Men – why the Stereotyping for Success

2011 Hairstyles for business menA conservative short hairstyle suited for a professional lifestyle is a pseudonym for a businessman’s short haircut. In colloquial terms hairstyles for business men typically means a tapered cut on the back and sides, with slightly long hair left on top to allow for the hair to be parted or brushed back from the forehead. Another version of this standard business cut is the Caesar, where the hair on the top of the head is layered to around a length of 1 to 2 inches, while the front is combed forward into short bangs.

While stereotypical dressing has always been part of human civilization, in modern times it is attained a sort of art-form. And I definitely mean it in a derogatory manner, whereby styles have become a measure of the man instead of being the other way round. An executive in charge can now just be judged solely by the image he exudes instead of his leadership capabilities. Think Richard Branson’s hair, does it fit anywhere in the manual of hairstyles for business men?

And then think of the men in charge of Enron, their hairstyles certainly were tailor made for success. I have no compunction in saying that we can lay the blame of many of today’s woes, not least of which is the credit crunch, at the doorsteps of hairstyles for business men. The Madoffs are managing our world today because style and not substance are the new yardsticks. There are reams upon reams of style protocols for professionals, how you are seen seems to be the be all and end all. Read the rest of this entry »

Business Women Hairstyles – Why so Severe

2011 Business women bob hairstylesAs a professional female I count myself lucky that I choose architecture instead of electrical engineering, business studies or accountancy. Because architects too are allowed the artistic freedom to dress pretty much as they like. I always shudder when encountering fellow women doctors, accounts and especially human resource professionals. Business women hairstyles seem to be some sort of archaic bondage that demands that they abide by a severe hair code, whereby the hair has to be the shortest minimum and as bland as can be managed.

I am not advocating that all women have frilly fussy hairstyles but simply something palatable. The most god awful example is the Victoria Beckham style. As business women hairstyles go, it is touted as the most polished look. A definite yes if you are a wax model in Madam Tassaud’s. The Vic bec look is a clothes hanger of thousands of dollars worth of designer ensemble and with about as much life to it.

Then there are strange self-created rules by the style gurus, for example if you have a small body and a larger head, stay away from big hair, however a small head and a large body, require a haircut that can balance this out. But the reigning mantra is that a lot of hair never really flatters any woman! It brings beauty pageants to mind; they are overt objectification while this is covert. In reality the situation with business women hairstyles  is another form of objectification of women. Read the rest of this entry »
