Punk hairstyles definitely turn heads and most require enough work that most wearers are happy to get the attention the hairstyle garners.  Punk is a subculture that has its own distinctive clothing, music, jewelry and of course, hairstyles.  The punk culture to a large degree revolves around looking and acting in a shocking, confrontational and often rebellious manner.  The interesting thing to note is that little has changed about punk hairstyles since its early beginnings in the later 1970′s.  There are a large variety of hairstyles that qualify as punk; the hairstyles are all united by certain similarities in color, cut, and style.

Color is very important and usually an extremely bright color is added in a very noticeable area, perhaps at the bangs or only at the very tips of the hair.  The cut of the hair can vary a great deal but there are some cuts that are exclusively associated with the punk culture.  For example, long shaggy hair on top with close-cropped shaved look on the lower half of the head is a cut that is exclusive to punk hairstyles and punk culture.  Having messages shaved into one’s hair is another style associated with punk culture and is especially common as a means of protest over some issue.

While the flyaway look (hair appears to not even be styled at all) is frequently associated with punk culture there is nothing that says punk quite like a mohawk.  To the chagrin of many ardent followers of punk culture, the mohawk has drifted more into the mainstream. But true punks are unfazed by this and merely counter this shift with more extreme designs to their mohawks.  A few examples of mohawks include liberty spikes where the spikes are very high so that the wearer resembles the Statue of Liberty, the fanned hawk where the hair in the middle of the head is made to stand up and fan out from the front hairline to the base of the neck, and the beaver where the hair is shaved or very closely cropped on the sides and a thick strip of hair left in the middle.  The beaver has also become very common among athletes.
